Quick answer

Yes, you can enquire about a business loan over the Melbourne Cup long weekend, and your enquiry is read when the specialists are back at work. Cup Day, Tuesday 3 November 2026, is a Victorian public holiday. Monday 2 November is a normal business day, so it's your best window. National settlement keeps running on the Tuesday, but Victorian lawyers, valuers and land registry services may not. Plan for Wednesday as the safe day.

Key points

  • Melbourne Cup Day is Tuesday 3 November 2026, a public holiday across Victoria unless a regional council has swapped it for a local day.
  • Monday 2 November is an ordinary business day. Many Victorians take it off, so act early that morning.
  • The RBA's RITS settlement system isn't on its closed list for Cup Day, but the people a property-secured loan needs may be on leave.
  • Saturday 31 October is a weekend month-end, so debits and rent can bunch up into the same short week.
  • Fast NPP payments run 24/7 through the whole break if you need to move money you already have.

Yes. You can enquire about a business loan over the Melbourne Cup long weekend, and it will be read when the team is back. The catch is the shape of the break. Cup Day is a Tuesday, it’s a Victorian-only holiday, and a lot of Victorians take the Monday off too. So a weekend that looks like two days off is really four slow ones.

Here’s what each of those days can and can’t do for you, and how to set things up so the file moves on the first day it can.

When is the Melbourne Cup holiday in 2026?

Melbourne Cup Day is Tuesday 3 November 2026. Business Victoria lists it as a public holiday across Victoria, unless a non-metro council has arranged a local holiday instead. Some regional councils swap it for their own race day or show day, so if your business is outside Melbourne, check what your council has done.

It isn’t a holiday anywhere else in Australia. Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth work as normal.

The week around it looks like this:

Day Date What it is
Wednesday 28 October Quarterly BAS due for July to September, if you lodge it yourself
Saturday 31 October Month-end, on a weekend
Sunday 1 November Weekend
Monday 2 November Normal business day. Many people are on leave
Tuesday 3 November Melbourne Cup Day, Victorian public holiday
Wednesday 4 November First full business day for most Victorian offices

The BAS date comes from the ATO’s due dates page. If you use a registered agent, your date may be later.

What still works on Cup Day, and what doesn’t?

This is where Cup Day differs from a national holiday like Christmas.

Still running:

  • Fast payments. The New Payments Platform runs 24/7, all year. Osko and PayID transfers between accounts can land in seconds on the Tuesday, subject to your bank’s limits and checks. The RBA explains how the platform works.
  • The national settlement system. The RBA says RITS is open on days when banks are generally open “in Sydney or Melbourne”. Its closed-day list includes New Year’s Day, Australia Day, Easter, Anzac Day, the King’s Birthday and Christmas, but not Cup Day (RBA — RITS business hours).
  • Your enquiry. The form is open the whole time.

Slowed or stopped:

  • People in Victoria. Lenders’ Melbourne staff, Victorian lawyers and conveyancers, valuers, accountants and your own bookkeeper may all be off.
  • Some bank processing. Banks set their own business-day rules for BPAY, direct debits and batch payments. Some banking and loan terms define a business day as one when banks are open in both Sydney and Melbourne, which would leave Cup Day out. Check your bank’s holiday notice rather than guessing.
  • Victorian property work. A settlement needs more than RITS. The lenders, lawyers and the land registry side all have to be ready. For Victorian property, assume Cup Day is not a settlement day unless your lawyer or conveyancer tells you otherwise. Our page on property settlements and weekends explains all the parts involved.

The safe working rule: if a step needs a person in Victoria, plan for it to happen on Monday morning or on Wednesday.

Why is Monday 2 November the day that matters?

Because it’s a real business day that a lot of people treat as a day off.

Monday isn’t a public holiday. Banks, lenders and the ATO all work. But plenty of Victorian businesses close or run with fewer staff so their people get four days in a row. That makes Monday morning both your best chance and an easy one to miss.

If you need funding before or just after Cup Day:

  1. Enquire over the weekend. An enquiry sent on Saturday or Sunday night is read first thing on Monday.
  2. Have the file ready by Monday 9am. Statements, ID, purpose, and property papers if there’s property. Our ready-by-morning score shows what’s missing.
  3. Line up your signers. If a co-director or guarantor is heading to the races or the coast, get their ID and a way to reach them before they go.
  4. Expect Wednesday to be busy. Everything that waited over the four days lands then. A file that’s complete on Monday is ahead of that queue.

With a complete file on a business day, $20k to $250k is possible the same day when it’s property-secured, and same-day funding is possible for smaller unsecured amounts. Larger amounts, up to $5m, are possible within 24 to 48 hours. Over Cup week, count Monday and Wednesday as your business days for anything that touches Victoria.

Short on cash before the Cup long weekend? Send a 60-second enquiry now. It doesn’t touch your credit file, and a real person picks it up on Monday morning.

Why does month-end make Cup week tighter?

October 2026 ends on a Saturday. Payments that follow business-day rules, such as many direct debits, rent and loan repayments, may move to Friday 30 October or to Monday 2 November, depending on each agreement. Customer payments due on the 31st often turn up late for the same reason.

Then Cup Day takes a Tuesday out of the following week. So the money going out bunches up around one short Monday, while some of the money coming in slips past the holiday.

Two quick checks for tonight:

  • List what’s due between 30 October and 4 November. Rent, direct debits, loan and equipment repayments, wages, and anything carried over from the BAS on 28 October.
  • List what’s due to come in. Who usually pays at month-end, and whether they’re Victorian and likely to be on leave on the Monday.

The gap between those two lists is your Cup week buffer. Our guide to month-end on a weekend walks through it in detail.

What about wages for staff who work on Cup Day?

If staff work on Cup Day, or are rostered off on a day they’d normally work, public holiday rules apply. Award penalty rates and entitlements depend on the award and where each employee works. The Fair Work Ombudsman’s 2026 public holiday list is the place to check the date, and your award sets the rates.

For hospitality, catering, event hire, transport and security businesses, Cup week is a peak, not a pause. The extra wages, stock and hire costs usually have to be paid before the carnival money comes in. Our public holiday wages guide covers planning that cash ahead of time.

An example: an event caterer’s Cup week

Illustrative example only. Not a real business.

A small catering business in Melbourne’s inner north has three marquee bookings across the Spring Racing Carnival. The deposits cover the food. They don’t cover the extra casual staff, the refrigerated van hire and a second coolroom unit, all due before the clients pay their final balances.

On Saturday 31 October, at 10.30pm after a long event day, the owner adds up the week. Rent and two equipment repayments are coming out on Monday. The final balances won’t arrive until the following week. The gap is about six weeks of normal takings.

That night she sends an enquiry and writes three lines about what the money is for and how it will be repaid from the final invoices. On Sunday she downloads six months of statements and photographs her ID. Her business partner is driving to the coast on Monday, so she gets his details before he leaves.

A specialist calls on Monday morning. The file is complete, and an unsecured facility sized on turnover is assessed that day. She works Cup Day knowing the wages are covered, and repays it as her clients pay in mid-November.

Planning a loan around Cup Day: a short checklist

  • Check if Cup Day is your holiday. Metro Melbourne, yes. Regional Victoria, check your council.
  • Note which parties are in Victoria. The lender’s team, your lawyer, the valuer, the property, your accountant.
  • Treat Monday as a full day you need to protect. Enquire before it, and be reachable on it.
  • Don’t book a Victorian property settlement for Cup Day unless your lawyer has confirmed it can happen.
  • Know your exit. One clear sentence on how the loan gets repaid. Our page on writing your loan purpose and exit plan shows how.
  • Use NPP for your own money. If you need to move funds between your own accounts on the holiday, fast payments can do it.

If you’re juggling a different long weekend, our long weekend page covers the standard three-day version.

Make the long weekend count before the race starts

Victorians are good at planning around the Cup. Outfits are booked weeks ahead, sweeps are organised and marquees are set up days before. Business cash flow deserves the same planning. A long weekend is a great time to get the file ready, and a bad time to start looking for finance.

If Cup week is going to stretch your cash, whether that’s carnival wages, a month-end pile-up or a bill that won’t wait until Wednesday, send the enquiry while it’s quiet. It takes about 60 seconds, and asking won’t leave a mark on your credit file. Your details stay with us and aren’t sent out to a pile of lenders, so you won’t get a flood of calls on Monday. A real person reads your situation and calls you on the next business morning.

Please fill the form in accurately: the amount, what it’s for, when you need it, and any property you own. That way the first conversation is about the right option, not about correcting details.

Frequently asked questions

Is Melbourne Cup Day a public holiday for the whole of Victoria?

It's a public holiday across Victoria unless a non-metro council has arranged a local holiday instead, usually for its own race day or show. Business Victoria publishes the list each year. If your business is in a regional area, check your council's notice.

Can I apply for a business loan on Melbourne Cup Day?

You can send an enquiry at any hour, including on Cup Day. It's read when the team is next working, and the full assessment, documents and funding happen on business days. Sending it over the weekend means it's near the top of the pile.

Can a property-secured loan settle on Melbourne Cup Day?

RITS, the Reserve Bank's settlement system, isn't on its closed list for Cup Day. But a settlement also needs lawyers, the lender and the land registry side to be ready, and for Victorian property some of them may be closed. Ask your lawyer or conveyancer directly, and plan for Wednesday 4 November.

Do banks process payments on Melbourne Cup Day?

Fast NPP payments, including Osko and PayID, run every day of the year. For BPAY, direct debits and batch payments, banks set their own business-day rules, and some loan and banking terms treat a public holiday in Melbourne as a non-business day. Check your bank's holiday notice for 3 November.

Is Monday 2 November a public holiday?

No. It's a normal business day in Victoria, even though many people take annual leave so they get four days off. Expect some offices to run with fewer staff, and contact anyone you need early on Monday morning.

I'm not in Victoria. Does Cup Day affect my business loan?

Usually only at the edges. If your lender, lawyer, valuer or the property is in Victoria, that part of the process may pause for the day. Everything outside Victoria runs normally.

What should I prepare over the Cup long weekend?

Six months of statements for every business account, ID for every director, your latest ATO statement, and a short note on what the money is for and how it will be repaid. If property is involved, add the rates notice and a recent statement for any loan on it.
